Dot's Origin Story

The name Dot carries dual significance: it draws inspiration from a data point—a focus or connection—and honors Dorothy J. “Dottie” Hanson Burton, a trailblazer in aerospace engineering, cost management, and the AACE community.

Dorothy J. “Dottie” Hanson Burton joined AACE in 1982 and quickly became a leader, serving on the Aerospace Cost Estimating Committee, as a Regional Director, and as Vice President–Technical on the Board of Directors. Notably, she was the last person elected to the Vice President–Technical role before the formation of the Technical Board, representing all technical subcommittees at the Board level. She was also active in the St. Louis Section.

Dottie earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mechanics from Washington University and an MBA from Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville. She entered the workforce in 1952, when her youngest child was just six months old, beginning a remarkable career at McDonnell Aircraft. There, she worked as a senior engineer designing helicopters and aircraft, including the Phantom F-4H Voodoo, before joining the space program in 1963 to calculate spacecraft landings on Mars.

In the 1970s, Dottie shifted her focus to innovation in project controls, developing project management, scheduling, and cost control software for McDonnell Douglas and other companies. She later served as a Cost Manager for the Alaskan Pipeline and traveled extensively across the United States and Europe, training engineers in scheduling and cost control systems.

Dottie retired in 1987 but remained active in AACE for several years. She contributed to five AACE Recommended Practices and the first edition of the Total Cost Management (TCM) Framework. She was recognized as an Honorary Life Member in 2000 and named an AACE Fellow in 2003.

Born in 1925, Dottie passed away in 2021, leaving a legacy of leadership, innovation, and service that reflects the best of AACE.
