(SK-3012) (Presentation Only) An Appreciation of Soft Skills Applied to Cost Engineering
Author(s)/Presenter(s): Martin R. Darley, CCP
Time/Location: Monday, June 25 from 10:15am to 11:15am / Regatta AB (4th Floor)
Abstract:
[Level: Intermediate] Often overlooked but core to successful project outcomes are the softer skills required by Cost Engineers that are critical in terms of delivering more predictable cost and schedule outcomes. With the end in mind the presentation will look at the strategies and behaviors of cost engineers that can be applied to develop execution plans with the end in mind, anticipating uncertainty and complexity to deliver results, and be trusted advisor to key stakeholders. Timely analysis, effective controls, risk mitigation, only deliver results by maintaining a focus on the work, collaboration, and good behaviors, through alignment and motivation.
(SK-3013) (Presentation Only) Planning & Scheduling Fundamentals
Author(s)/Presenter(s): Steve Feng; Julianne Richards, PSP
Time/Location: Tuesday, June 26 from 4:00pm to 5:00pm / Regatta AB (4th Floor)
Abstract:
[Level: Basic] Managing the element of time may be a new or challenging concept for some professionals. There are two fundamental practices that help teams achieve project completion in a timely manner; Planning & Scheduling. Planning address the effort to influence the future by making decisions based on missions, needs, and objectives. Planning often can be considered an art, however, there is a standard practice to develop a Critical Path Method baseline schedule to share with all stakeholders. After the strategy and plan has been complete, it is time to execute that plan. Scheduling involves the coordination and monitoring of the project. By the end of this training, you will be comfortable with the fundamentals of Planning & Scheduling, the practice of developing a baseline schedule, how to update the project schedule and more.
(SK-3014) (Presentation Only) Planning & Scheduling Fundamentals Workshop
Author(s)/Presenter(s): Steve Feng; Julianne Richards, PSP
Time/Location: Tuesday, June 26 from 5:15pm to 6:15pm / Regatta AB (4th Floor)
Abstract:
[Level: Basic] How do you develop a critical path baseline schedule? When was the last time you calculated the critical path by hand? It is time to pull out your pencils and paper to develop a baseline schedule! Yes, the old fashion way. Whether this is your first time, you are preparing on taking the PSP exam, or need a refresher on how to plan, this session is for you.
We will be conducting an interactive, hands-on workshop to walk through the best practices to create a critical path method baseline schedule. Owners, technical professionals, project managers, and superintendents at one point in their career should learn the importance of planning and calculating a critical path method schedule.
This workshop will not be a boring classroom example! Get ready to work with a team, look at construction drawings, develop work sequences, and ultimately come up with a critical path schedule deliverable.

(SK-3015) (Presentation Only) Data Analysis and Reporting with Power BI
Author(s)/Presenter(s): Steve Feng
Time/Location: Tuesday, June 26 from 2:15pm to 3:15pm / Regatta AB (4th Floor)
Abstract:
[Level: Basic] Looking to impress executives and for that matter the whole company, but you are just an average professional? We have the solution!
The world continues to change at exponential rates. Often our professional work depends on tools like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint to compile data into charts and reports. Microsoft has recently developed a new software to help with this process. Rather than creating, recreating, and emailing out your reports, Power BI will link and refresh data automatically from various sources, and then provide a dashboard with the charts and reports. Power BI allows any user to view these charts as well including features such as sorting, filtering, and organizing information that will ultimately allow you to make more informed business decisions. If you miss this training, you will be missing out on a way to be more efficient with your daily work and might even lead to your next promotion.
(SK-3016) (Presentation Only) Implementation of an EVM System
Author(s)/Presenter(s): Michael R. Nosbisch, CCP PSP FAACE
Time/Location: Tuesday, June 26 from 10:15am to 11:15am / Regatta AB (4th Floor)
Abstract:
[Level: Basic] Have you wondered about how a formal earned value management (EVM) system could be applied in support of a construction project, if at all? In addition to clarifying inherent nuances related to the terminology, this presentation will analyze the applicability of EVM systems in support of different types of projects and will examine lessons learned from the presenter's own experience. More importantly, it will offer several recommended practices that can be leveraged by contractors, consultants, and project Owners.
(SK-3017) (Presentation Only) Intelligent Project Forecasting Using Earned Value Extensions of The Traditional EVM S-Curve Graph
Author(s)/Presenter(s): Michael Bensussen
Time/Location: Tuesday, June 26 from 11:30am to 12:30pm / Regatta AB (4th Floor)
Abstract:
[Level: Intermediate] If a pictures tells a thousand words, then the EVM reporting S-Curve is an invaluable tool. However, the traditional earned-value-management curve leaves much to be desired. In terms of conveying the most useful information in the timeliest of fashions, there is room for improvement. In an effort to complement and enhance the value of the traditional S-Curve, this presentation will review the basic component of what comprises a typical curve and then focus on the inclusion of additional metrics that engage factorable project data. The benefit of this data is a telling illustration of the current project status and history as well as a more informed and intelligent forecast for actual cost and actual future performance. Examples and discussions will show that forecast-factoring and performance-drawdown can be elegant, but simple additions to any project professional’s quiver of useful Earned Value tools.
