B5:  How to Assess an Ongoing Project

Typically, construction projects are more subject to variations and uncertainties than projects of other fields, due to its nature of unknown quantities, long durations, dependence on steady labor production rates, likeliness of scope changes, multiple items to procure, and multiple stakeholders. As a result, an ongoing project has a high probability of showing deviations from the planned/budgeted conditions. Hence, project controls tools are necessary since the early beginning of the project. In this course, the facilitators show how to assess a project from a cost, schedule and contract administration standpoint, highlighting the importance of validating its assumptions, measuring its performance against the baseline and how to implement actions to bring the project back on track.

Aldo Mattos is a construction project management consultant who assists owners, contractors and investors in project management, cost control, estimating, planning scheduling, feasibility studies and disputes resolution.Based in Brazil, his is a nationally recognized expert in project management, construction cost estimating and planning. He also holds a Law degree and a Masters degree in Geophysics. His international experience spans multiple industries, including power plants, renewable energy plants, transportation, public housing and environment, in more than 10 countries in America, Europe and Africa. His experience also includes the role of Owner’s Representative at an airport expansion project. Mr. Mattos is currently AACE Region 10 Director. Author of five books on construction cost estimating, planning and real estate policies, he is an active lecturer on a wide range of construction-related topics. He often presents papers at conferences. He is very skilled in training and motivating teams.
